Aris - Olympiakos 2-2

Text from the Olympiakos site as I couldn't watch the match personally. (Appalling internet connection)

"Olympiacos failed to register a victory against Aris at “Kleanthis Vikelidis" stadium, leaving with the draw.
For the first time in this Super League season, Olympiacos failed to exit the pitch victorious. The side was hold to a 2-2 draw against Aris in Thessaloniki, yet retains the top place in the championship table, on the road for its 40th title.

Leonardo Jardim chose not to change his starting line-up much compared to the Montpellier fixture, but to keep it to the outmost necessary. Caroll under the post; Torosidis, Cholevas, Manolas and Contreras in the defensive line; Modesto with Maniatis and Tatos in the midfield. Also, Abdoun coming from the right, Machado on the left, and Kostas Mitroglou at the top of the offensive line.

Our side started off on the wrong foot, since it took 3 minutes for the opponent to score. Olympiacos comeback was immediate with a successfully converted penalty by Abdoun in 9 minutes’.

In the 2nd half, Leonardo Jardim unleashed Lykogiannis and Greco in the pitch, replacing Tatos and Modesto. In 79’, Aris managed to take the lead, 2-1, but Olympiacos response was again not a moment late. Pantelic entered the match, Machado took the free-kick from the left and, in 81’, Cholevas netted the equalizer, 2-2!

ARIS: Velidis, Psychogios, Poulido, Pantidos, Margritis, Coelhio, Papasterianos (83’ Aslanidis), Oikonomopoulos, Kaznaferis (64’ Ghesios), Gianiotas, Agantho (87΄ Damarlis).

OLYMPIACOS: Carroll, Maniatis, Modesto (68’ Lykogiannis), Tatos (68’ Greco), Machado, Mitroglou, Contreras, Cholevas, Manolas, Torosidis (81’ Pantelic), Abdoun."

Olympiakos 3-0 Aris

Introduction
After our sub-zero temperature heroics in the Ukraine, we came back to our home in the Giorgos Karaiskakis stadium for our league match against Aris. Aris had been having some trouble ahead of the match with their own players refusing to train at the start of the week (unpaid wages). We on the other hand had just two and a half days to prepare for this match and there was the risk of fatigue amongst a couple of the team. Still, we hoped for a fine victory here and then we can move onto the game against Metalist.

Strong Opening
The tie opened with us having a chance on goal (along with two follow up chances) in just the first 20 seconds of the match. This high tempo start was followed with two corners and a shot from Ibagasa in the first five minutes itself. We were firmly in control of the game during this early period and Aris had to work hard to stop us running riot in their area. The Salonika team had one run into our half within the 13th minute of the game but this lone effort aside, this was all they managed in the opening 15 minutes of the match.

First Goal
Our domination continued and it was inevitable that we would score first. In the event, we had to wait until the 18th minute before Ivan Marcano headed in a cross from a corner but we almost doubled our lead with a Mirallas shot just two minutes later. Three minutes after that, Mirallas then shot a point-blank range effort wide from inside the box and we followed this up with a free kick from the edge of the area into the arms of the keeper. Abdoun and Modesto had more direct chances on goal for the team and it was an absolute mystery how we were only one goal ahead.

Sifakis Red Carded
Aris finally started to get themselves into the game at the 30 minute mark but even then we soon took over possession of the ball and went straight back onto the attack again. To their credit they did manage to win a free kick in a decent position during this portion of the match but then failed to do anything with it. During our attack, Sankara blatantly handled the ball in the box only for the referee to do nothing and wave play-on. We did get some retribution though when Abdoun grabbed the ball and rounded the keeper only to be dragged down from behind. Sifakis was rightly red-carded for the foul (replaced by Vellidis) whilst Holebas took the subsequent penalty and scored to finish off the half.

Second Half
In the second half, we had Abdoun intercept, grab the ball off a defender and take a shot on goal only for Vellidis to save his effort. We also had a number of corners but couldn't create anything worthwhile from them. Aris had their first corner of the match with after a shot on goal (incidentally also their first chance in the game). We did seemed to have slowed down though and we weren't pushing as hard on their goalmouth as we once were. Aris also had a second chance of the match with a header which went wide of goal.

Mirallas Scores
We did still push forward whenever circumstances dictated though and still gave Aris enough to be concerned about at the back. Our play though was not at the same frenetic pace as earlier but we did manage to score a third goal through Kevin Mirallas who managed to quickly poke the ball underneath the keeper in the 69th minute. This followed a quick pass into the box and Mirallas managing to break the defensive line. To spare his legs for the upcoming games, Mirallas was substituted soon afterwards and made way for Kazim-Richards.

Endgame
In the final quarter hour of the match Aris came forward at us in an attempt to spare their blushes and to be fair to them, Soltani did at least make an attempt to do something for them. We looked competant defensively however and no matter how much they came at us we always managed to take the ball and go onto the offensive once again. The game came to a finish after three minutes of extra time and with it we had gained another win. The game should have been 5-0 or 6-0 if we had finished all of our chances but we could be content with a 3-0 scoreline and a very good display to go with it.

Aris 2-3 Olympiakos

For tonights game, we visited the Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium in Salonika. Our opponent was an Aris team which only last week had sacked its manager and had fallen apart in recent weeks. As for ourselves, we obviously has our loss on Tuesday night and so we really needed to bounce back with a win here.

The game saw Aris start off the stronger and they won a couple of corners at our expense early on. We quickly recovered though and started to put some pressure on their team and scored the opener in the 7th minute courtesy of Djebbour. The goal came from a corner, shot into the area but then mis-hit to the far post where it bobbled free. Djebbour simply ran onto the ball and shot home to open the scoring. After the restart Aris picked themselves up and came at us again but we were easily able to defend against their attacks.

After the opening 15 minutes of the game, we started to take over on the pitch and create more chances on their goal. Monche coming close when he beat the offside trap but shot over the bar. Djebbour also came close to adding a second with a point blank ranged header but couldn't get his head on the ball correctly. We ended up scoring a second though soon enough. A free kick was played into the area, Francois Modesto broke free from his marker and simply headed the ball into the net for us to go 2-0 up.

The onslaught continued in our favour even after the second goal with Aris seemingly impotent to create anything of note and firmly on the defensive as we searched out a third goal. The only thing that Aris were good at was fouling our players with some challenges which were somewhere between hard and dangerous. We finished the half off continuing to attack and two goals to the good.

In the second half, we continued with our good play and tried to drag the ball up the pitch. Aris however had improved and were counter attacking when possible. Following our third good chance on goal in the opening ten minutes of the half, the Aris keeper managed to hurt himself and the game needed to be stopped for a couple of minutes for him to recover.

With the game still remaining positive for us, we made the first of our substitutions whilst Aris went on the attack to grab one back. Amazingly we then countered up the pitch and broke their defence at the centreline with three of our players only now facing the goalkeeper. Monche tried to lob the keeper and had his shot bounce back off the crossbar then fired his second shot well over the goal. Annoying to say the least and I can only be left wondering if Monche is a good enough player for Olympiakos.

In the 76' Aris get one back from a close range shot after a corner. This is annoying but no single player could be blamed for the goal, it was simply bundled over the line by a mass of Aris bodies. Aris took advantage of their temporary play and started to come at us more whilst we tried to counter attack. In the event we get a third goal to put the game beyond doubt. A free kick was played from the front into the area, Makoun was available to head the ball into the net and re-establish a two goal lead.
The lead didn't last long as Aris player Faty scored for them from a close ranged header and Aris once again were coming close to an upset. We were firmly on the defensive as the game entered the first of five minutes of extra time. We had a final chance to go two goals ahead in the 4th added minute but Djebbour managed to have his shot saved despite being one on one with the keeper. There was no further action but we did manage to win away in Charilou and keep the pressure on the teams at the top of the table.

Aris 1-3 Olympiakos
7' Djebbour
28' Modesto
76' Toha
83' Makoun
85' Faty

Olympiakos (Valverde) : Megyeri, Torosidis, Mellberg, Papadopoulos, Holebas, Orbaiz, Modesto, Mirallas (93' Fejsa), Moche (78' Marcano), Ibagasa (62' Makoun), Djebbour

Olympiakos 87-64 Aris

Olympiakos swept Aris away with a 87-64 scoreline in the final match of the semi-finals. We now have to face our clients in the finals for the last games of the season.
The game was won to bring the score to 3-0 for the games played and this was achieved with Gordon and Teodosic being protected during the match and not being played at all. We started the game off with Papaloukas and Spanoulis taking the places of Teodosic and Gordon in the initial pentad but we were not great initially. Aris made life difficult for our players and managed to fight very well against us before we finally got the score to 14-9 and then 19-15 at the end of the first period.
The second period was similarly hard fought and Aris even went in front for a time. We did recover though and through Halperin and Papaloukas we tightened our play, recovering the advantage in the game and just about being in front at the end of the half.

The second half saw us start to improve our gameplay further and we pulled away from Aris. The Salonikan now seemed to simply raise the white flag and dissolve as a team. Pelikanos helped with scoring in the game and we soon opened up a 19 point advantage by the end of the third period. The final quarter was simply more of the same and we easily ran out winners to set up a final showdown with the Lagoi.

Aris 76-102 Olympiakos

Olympiakos beat Aris today in the 2nd game of the semi-finals with a 102-76 scoreline and will look to sweep Aris away on Monday evening when we have our 3rd (and potentially final) match of the series. This was our 34th victory of the season and we never looked anything but invincible during the game itself.

We started off with a familiar pentad of Teodosic, Gordon, Papanikolaou, Mavrokefalidis and Bourousis in the Alexandreio area. Our play was superior to aris right from the start of the match and we easily built up a 2-11 lead within minutes with Teodosic leading the line. We didn't play very well defensively but we had no need to early on in the game, despite Kasirov making some damage on our team and bringing the score from 8-17 to 23-27.

In the second period, we made some small errors and didn't seem to follow the orders of Dusan Ivkovic. Papaloukas, Glyniadakis and Erceg helped with the team and so the score went first from 23-30 to 37-47. We had supremacy within the game but we were struggling to break free away from Aris and their players Charalambidis and Babsic were still making us pay with the scoreline.

After halftime we made a significant improvement to our game, we reached a point differential of +16 (43-59) but Aris fought back and brought the score down to 50-59 with a seven point break. To counter this, Teodosic scored a basket whilst he was also helped by the good play of Mavrokefalidis. We started to break away from Aris and at the end of the third period, we had made a score of 61-75.

The fourth period was simply a formal process and we simply demolished Aris in this final ten minutes. We tightened our defence whilst continuing to create some beautiful attacks. Printezis and Keselj combined together to score 13 points and we scored a total of 27 points (to Aris's 15) to bring the final score in the game to 76-102. We now meet Aris on Monday and look to finish off the Semi finals then.

Olympiakos also strolled to an easy home win over Aris with a 95-63 score at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
Milos Teodosic scored 20 points and Thodoris Papaloukas added another 13 for Olympiakos, but the big news for the Reds concerns the return to action of Vassilis Spanoulis.

Aris 1-2 Olympiakos

For todays game, we go to Salonika for the away game against Aris FC. We have a couple of changes in the team as Torosidis failed to make the team through injury and has been replaced by Maniatis. Djebbour is starting on the right wing and Mirallas won an appeal this morning as he was informed about his suspension for this game late by the EPO. He will therefore lead the line after being cleared to play.

We start the game off at a fast pace but although we spend the majority of the first ten minutes in possession of the ball, we cannot make our superiority pay and grab the opening goal. We do break into the box and on occassions look very menacing indeed but we haven't made any shots on goal in the opening exchange. Aris by comparison look happy to soak up the pressure and counter attack when they can.

Unfortunately it is Aris who open the scoring when we fail to effectively clear the ball following an Aris attack. We get the ball so far up the pitch before it is lost and pumped back into the box. Our defenders then manage to lose out in the aerial challenge and Aris defender Neto is then free to shoot over Pardo and into the top of the net. The goal comes totally against the run of play and is a shock to our players who then take a few minutes to compose themselves afterwards.

After the goal, we do manage to eventually get ourselves together and then start to pressurise the Aris goal. Aris then break up our attacks with some counter attacks of their own and the outcome is frustration for our players. Djebbour comes close to opening the scoring with a long range effort but we then have to make our first substitution of the match when Mirallas is withdrawn through injury and replaced with Jaouod Zairi.

The half continues onwards with ourselves doing the lions share of any attacking and Aris simply sitting back and then countering when they can. We are looking very shaky defensively when Aris do counter but it is not long before we have tied the game score. With our goal, we build up the play on the left wing before switching the ball to Fuster on the edge of the area. Fuster passes right to Ibagaza who chips the ball over the defence to Djebbour who has broken free of the defence. Djebbour fires the ball home and we deservedly score the equaliser. The half finishes after 2 minutes of extra time and there is nothing else to note.

The second half sees us resume the offensive once more and we are very unlucky not to grab a penalty when Fuster is dragged down in the box just two minutes after the start. Aris then have chances of their own but shoot over whilst we manage to contain their other attacks with ease. We again break into their area and have a player barged in the back, but again - no penalty. Apart from this and numerous stops whistled by the referee, we are fighting for control of the ball with Aris.

After a short while we start to take over in the game and launch wave after wave of attacks at the Aris goalmouth to try and break the deadlock. we break into the box numerous times but cannot manage to get the final shot away on goal. We make our second substitution in the 70th minute with Maniatis being replaced with Torosidis whilst Nery Castillo, a former Olympiakos player who was once a mainstay of the team, comes on for Aris. Torosidis has only just come on for the team when we grab the important second goal to go into the lead. The ball is crossed into the centre of the box by Ibagaza where Djebbour is waiting marked by two Aris defenders. Djebbour manages to get a touch with his head on the ball and knock it to the right where Fuster is waiting. Fuster makes an acrobatic kick straight at the keeper who spills the ball into the back of the net. 1-2!!!

Holebas is our final substitution, coming on in the 83rd minute for Raul Bravo. Despite being in the lead now, we continue to attack to try and grab a third goal and give us a two goal advantage. Aris, who have now used all their substitutions to throw on more attackers looks decidedly worried as we go forward and they have to backtrack up the field. Aris do come close to our goal at times but we also help relieve the pressure by attacking as much as possible. The game ends after 3 minutes of extra time and we gain the 3 points here and move now into the derby against the Rabbits
