Greek cup - Atromitos 1-1 Olympiakos

We qualified for the next stage of the Greek Cup last night with a 1-1 draw. The draw however was good enough to see us advance on away goals in the last four. We will then be drawn against the Vazeloi, Voulgaroi or OFI.

The game itself was reasonable from ourselves, we did the majority of the attacking and regularly threatened the Atromitos goal but we just couldn't get the elusive goal. Atromitos scored from an offside position in the 42nd minute but we got the equaliser from a penalty call in the 56th. It wasn't a brilliant game and the free stream was terrible quality which didn't help matters but we got through and that was enough for me.

Olympiakos 0-0 Atromitos

We played the first leg of our latest cup tie last night, this time against Atromitos. Unfortunately for us, we ended up getting a 0-0 draw and now have to make sure that we at least achieve a score draw in the return leg.

This isn't the worst result in the world. We came close on quite a few occasions but Atromitos defended in depth (something they won't be able to do if they want to win) and had luck on their side. We should have perhaps grabbed at least one goal in the dying stages of the match but I guess it was not to be.
I can't complain too hard, we played decently enough. Atromitos were playing defensively and how the hell some of our shots on goal stayed out, I'll never know.

We have the return leg in the next few weeks (date to be determined) and we'll get the win if we play at the same level as we did last night.

On Holiday

Unfortunately I will be away in Greece for the next week and a bit, so there will be no reports for the Panthrax and Atromitos games.

I will however try to write some small updates on our facebook page and should be back in England before the game against Arsenal.

Atromitos 0-2 Olympiakos

Introduction
Todays match against Atromitos marked the end of a successfull season for Olympiakos and also the first of two times we would be playing Atromitos in the space of 7 days (we play them in the cup on Saturday 28th). The team we turned out was not the strongest available and several players were rested in advance of the cup. The game itself was more or less a dead match for us although we wouldn't particularly want to lose the match either.

First Half
The match didn't start brightly for us but we worked to take possession of the ball in the centre of the field, and after the first ten minutes we had started to control the game more confidently. Our first chance on goal came in the eleventh minute from a short range Diogo header which was unfortunately aimed directly at the keeper. In general, we were playing well and pressuring the opposition goalmouth but without scoring as yet and still susceptible to the odd Atromitos counter attack.

We continued with our aggressive gameplay, bringing the ball closer to the Atromitos net with Fetfatzidis having a fine effort saved off the line in the 30th minute. Fetfatzidis was also a very frustrating player to watch with his insistance of preferring to dribbling through three or four players rather than pass to a free teammate. We were almost caught out with an Atromitos counter attack in the 34th minute when Mitroglou broke through our defence but managed to recover when the same player slipped over in the box.
Nevertheless we continued with the pressure and came close again in the 41st minute with a shot from the box of the box courtesy of Fejsa which made the keeper stretch to push wide. This was the last action of note in the first half.

Second Half
The second half was only a minute old when we won a penalty for a foul on Diogo in the box. Fuster took the penalty but saw his effort saved (which was a good result since Diogo dived for the penalty in the first place). This did not stop us from keeping up the pressure on the Atromitos goal though and we kept a good attacking rate on the opposition area throughout the half. Fuster again came close in the 60th minute after an elaborate pass from Monje but saw his shot saved.
A minute later though and we scored the opening goal which we had been threatening all match. A free kick from 30 metres out was lobbed into the box, it eluded everyone apart from Marcano on the far side of the box. Marcano took the opportunity to shoot into the net from the tight angle and open the scoring.

Fetfatzidis scored the second goal after we managed to break through their defence with two players to their final defender. Giannis Fetfatzidis composed himself then lobbed the keeper beautifully to double the scoreline. Despite what I wrote earlier it was a lovely finish (but I still wish he'd pass more than trying to dribble umpteen opponents). Atromitos tried to instantly reply through Epstein and Tatos but luckily we stayed defensively firm to stop their chances (and even clear the ball off the line).

In the last period of the game, Atromitos came at us to try and get one goal back and save some face since they had been on the back foot for most of the match. We tended to be defending well but we were also penetrated a couple of times which led to Potouridis coming onto the pitch and replacing Makoun (giving us 5 at the back). We ended playing the game out in this formation and wound the clock down to the end of the match.

Summary
We had made a decent enough win after todays win although some of the plays did help remind of the thin nature of the squad and I still have some doubts on whether the likes of Diogo and Monje are good enough for anything but backup status. Fuster as well seemed wasteful on the ball and it may be that his injury earlier in the season has affected his gameplay even after regaining fitness. Still, it was a competent enough win and a good prelude to next weekends all important cup final.

Olympiakos 1-0 Atromitos

Introduction
Tonight was our first match of 2012 and the last match of the opening round of matches. A good win here would have allowed us to keep the pressure on the Vazeloi at the top of the league which had not seen any action for two and a half weeks. This was our last midweek match for a while and we revert to weekend matches after this game.

First Half
The game started at a quick and aggressive pace allowing us to surge forward early on and make attacks on the Atromitos goal. However we were having trouble making headway on their defence as Atromitos were falling back when required and packing their defence with so many bodies it was making it hard for us to break through. The only exception to this was a smart attack in the 12th minute which caught them on the hop and allowed Djebbour to make a good header on goal (unfortunately wide).

Controlling The Game
We continued to attack when possible and managed to keep the ball upfield during the first half. Unfortunately our finishing was somewhat inefficient and Djebbour had another chance given to him to open the scoring during this period but fired his shot disappointingly wide. Atromitos started to drag the ball further up the pitch during general play yet fall back when defending and this was proving to frustrate our forwards. Atromitos were also improving as the half went on although we coped with their attacks easily enough.

Further Chances
Once Atromitos had made their few attacks of the half, we took over control of the ball again and attempted to go for goal. Despite our team throwing everything they had at the chances and the sheer amount of chances, we just couldn't manage to get the ball into the net. The first half ended at 0-0, we had a huge amount of possession and attacks on goal but we just couldn't manage to cut through their defence effectively and score the goal.

Marcano Scores
Eventually in the 53rd minute of the game we got the break we were after. After a largely indifferent opening to the second half (and the first Atromitos chance on goal), we managed to grab the ball, get up the field and win a corner. From the corner, Fetfatzidis drifted the ball in and Marcano was found on the end to head the ball home and open the scoring. With the game now going against them, Atromitos looked broken and allowed our team to get forward a little easier and fire shots on goal (Fuster blazing a shot wide).

Atromitos Recover
After their initial shock at conceding the goal, Atromitos got their act together and came forward again. On the first time, they made a headed chance on goal which Megyeri had to save, whilst their second was easily dealt with. Atromitos were however showing a new intent to equalise and Megyeri was soon called upon to intercept another chance for them following a corner. Atromitos continued to attack whilst we now changed to a counter attacking style to confound them and hopefully grab a second. Defensively we weren't under too much pressure even with the additional Atromitos attacks.

We kill off the game
As the game moved towards the finish, Atromitos made their final substitutions and attempted to get the equalising goal. We continued to counter attack whilst we also shored up our defence by swapping Mirallas for Mellberg. The Peristeri team made a number of more attempts to come forward whilst the game moved into two minutes of extra time. A final chance from a free kick was punched clear by Megyeri and it was all over. We perhaps should have won by a greater scoreline but we had at least won and picked up the three points. Onto matchday 16!

Olympiakos has announced the capture of Andreas Tatos from Atromitos. The player signed on a four year deal but will immediately return on loan to Atromitos for this season.
This is a good move for the club, we get a fine quality young player and let another club develop him for a year. Once next summer has arrived we can then evaluate him and see how he plays in pre-season. This is obviously preferable to keeping a player at the club but having very little chance to play at all for an entire year.

Mitroglou goes to Atromitos

Kostas Mitroglou has been announced as joining Atromitos on loan for the next season, he will return to our club next June.  Mitroglou had been told that he was surplus to requirements this year but a loan move is probably best for all involved. We get to keep a striker who despite his faults does manage to stick the ball in the net and Atromitos get themselves a good player who will score a bucket load of goals for them.

Atromitos 3-1 Olympiakos

Todays game is the penultimate one of the season and comes from Peristeri where we face Atromitos. Atromitos are fighting against relegation whilst we have not officially asked for any tickets to allow our supporters to attend. Todays match then may be a tough one for us although we have the quality to win here.

At the start of the game, Atromitos go on the attack straight away and win a free kick from a good position after an Olof Mellberg foul but fail to do anything with the opportunity. After this initial attack, both teams try to settle to some sort of play but the pace of play is low and very few decent chances are created early on. Atromitos come very close to scoring in the 8th minute with a bouncing shot which has to be knocked wide and a further corner which is headed off target. Apart from these chances though, there is precious little to write about in the first fifteen minutes and the game is being played at a very sedate pace.

After the initial 15 minutes, Atromitos are the ones still making the most of their chances and taking pot shots at our goal. We do have some chances of our own but our play is too lethargic for anything of any note. In the event, atromitos do take the advantage and open the scoring when a fairly innocuous backpass bounces off our defence who simply stand there and let the Atromitos strikers nip in and shoot the ball home for 1-0. Atromitos follow this up with further attacks including a corner which we have difficulty in clearing. We haven't really improved since the goal was scored and still look second best at a lot of times.

We eventually score the equaliser from a dead ball situation. Rommedahl took a free kick from near to the left hand corner and floated the ball over the mass of players. Modesto was on hand at the position where it landed and he headed it past the Atromitos defence for 1-1. However as soon as we score the equaliser, Atromitos are back in front with a goal of their own. A corner for them isn't cleared properly by our defence and it's left to a goalmouth scramble and a short range shot into the back of the net to make it 2-1. We still don't seem to improve even after conceding the second goal and as the half draws to a close, we still see Atromitos doing the lions share of any attacking and holding most of the possession. The half finishes after a single minute of extra time and we can be grateful that we have only conceded two goals.

The second half initially sees more of the same although we are now hanging onto control of the ball more often. Atromitos manage to then score a third goal however with a long pass from the wingback into the box where Henri Camara is waiting (offside?) to hit the ball after an initial bounce. After the third goal has been scored though we spring into life and actually start playing a proper game. This doesn't last for long though and we soon revert to the low intensity play that we've been utilising so far.

Albert Riera is being readied on the sidelines as the half continues and it isn't long before he's brought into play, replacing Fetfatzidis. (Our other substitution was Djebbour for Fuster at half time). Atromitos still have possession of the ball mainly but we're also now getting forward on more occasions and starting to force more opportunities and corners from them.

As the game gets into the last 15 minutes of the match, we are no closer to winning the game than we were when the first goal went in (We also make our last substitution by replacing Modesto with Yiannis Papadopoulos). We still have one or two shots on goal but nothing of any note. We win two free kicks on the edge of the area, both of which are dealt with unfortunately. This is it for the match now, theres no more chances of note and the game finishes 3-1 to Atromitos. Due to results elsewhere, Larisa and Asteras Tripolis join Panserraikos in relegation from the superleague.
