Olympiakos reach last 16 of the NextGen

Our team managed to top the group and qualify for the round of 16 teams in the NextGen competition after a win over Atletic Bilbao. The win meant that Olympiakos finished ahead of Arsenal, Bilbao and Marseille in the standings.

I don't think this should be brushed over, we have proved that our team is capable of standing toe-to-toe with teams with very advanced youth facilities and beat them. Arsenal is famed for their youth policy and their ability to grow their stars from their academy and Marseille's is similarly very well regarded and known for their results in grooming future players.
We've done very well to top the group in the face of such prestigious teams and academies.

Olympique Marseille 0-1 Olympiakos Piraeus

Tonights game came from Southern France where we played Olympique Marseille in the day 5 match of the champions league. We were carrying a number of injuries in the midfield and tonights formation was definitely showing this but we had to try and grab at least a point here to have any chance of progressing further in Europe this season.
The French pricks showed off their friendship with the AEK chickens during their coreo so a victory here would taste that little bit sweeter and enact some revenge for our loss on day 1.

The opening minutes see us perform well and fight for control over the pitch, where we won a free kick for our troubles. Marseille were being pegged back into their half during our attacks so it was imperative that we continued to play in the same way. We managed to score a goal during the early part of the match only to see it ruled offside. Our effort came from a free kick which Mellberg got on top of and headed into the back of the net. The trouble was, he moved fractionally offside just as the free kick was taken and so it was ruled offside. Harsh decision which would have been 'missed' if we were a Real , Manchester United or Chelsea status of team.

The half continued with Marseille starting to get more possession of the ball and starting to threaten our goal. We still had our share of the ball though and continued to get forward whenever the opportunuity rose. We were however conceding corners a little bit too regularly for my liking and we would have to improve as the game went on.

Despite the comeback from the French team, we subsequently took over with the ball again and started to make efforts on goal. The better of these being free kicks taken close to the area and two superb shots from Mirallas and a follow up from Holebas which really tested the keeper and resulted in a corner for us. A further shot from Maniatis tested their keeper and it continued in this vein until half time. We had made a superb first half showing but unfortunately had not been able to get the all important goal advantage.

Initially, the second half starts with us doing all the attacking although a slight mishap at the back gave cause for concern where an error led to a point blank ranged shot on goal and we were lucky not to have conceded from it. This momentary lapse aside though and we were still coping, although another scramble around our goalmouth narrowly avoided turning into a goal.

At the other end though, we had a great one-on-one chance from Mirallas but the Marseille keeper saved his shot, infuriatingly for us. Another chance went begging just minutes later when a low shot across the goalmouth couldn't be knocked in. All in all though, we were all over the French team for the previous 5 minutes.

After a brief series of attacks from Marseille (including a close range header which Megyeri managed to save), we go on the offensive again and try to get something in the last 15 minutes of the game. We launch attack after attack on their goal but just couldn't manage to get the ball into the net. Mirallas, Yeste and Djebbour all fired away shots but without success.

Eventually though, we get the goal which we had been working for all match, Fetfatzidis with the low shot from the side of the box which went into the back of the net. With the dynamics of the game altered, Marseille threw everything they could at us and our defence (especially Megyeri) had to put in some great performances to stop conceding. A sloppy freekick was conceded on the edge of the box but the resulting shot was so poor that our Hungarian keeper didn't have to strain in order to pick it up.

In the three minutes of extra time, we tried to keep the ball at the top of the pitch with Fetfatzidis and Torosidis combining well to keep it in the top corner and waste time. Eventually the ball did break free and the French had one final chance on goal. We kept our defence though and ran down the clock successfully.
Our victory here sees us overtake Dortmund in the standings and only be 2 points behind Marseille in second place. A superb performance and a great night for us - A giant fuck you to the AEK loving Marseille fans!

Olympiakos 0-1 Marseille.

Tonights game came from the red-hot atmosphere of a packed Giorgos Karaiskaki stadium. Olympiakos faced the impressive Olympique Marseille in the first matchday of the Champions League. The stadium was absolutely packed out for tonights game and everyone anticipated a fine match and probably more importantly, a win to start our campaign with a bang. Our team lined up in the standard 4-2-3-1 formation with Costanzo, Torosidis, Mellberg, Papadopoulos, Holebas, Modesto, Fejsa, Abdoun, Yeste, Fuster and Mirallas making up the team on the pitch. This was our first competitive match for 5 months but we hoped that the team would be able to win the game comfortably tonight.

As for the match itself, we kicked off the game but it was Marseille who won the first chance of the night with a corner and a header (over) on goal in the first two minutes. In reply, we had two chances from free kicks early on but neither was even close to a chance. We did get the ball in an around the French box on a few occasions but there was nothing of any real note. For the first ten minutes of the game, we were in good control of the game but unable to convert some reasonable play into proper scoring chances.

The next few minutes saw Yeste take a knock to the head and Marseille having some possession of the ball but nothing which was particularly threatening. We managed to counter the ball up the field and get a shot on goal courtesy of Mirallas but it was easily saved. Mirallas had another chance on goal from a sidepass in the box but managed to miss from close range. When Marseille did manage to get chances away on goal, they were either from long range or our defence managed to intercept the pass/shot.

Marseille were getting more control of the ball as the half went on but for the time, our defence was holding out and performing very well at closing down their forwards. We were stick getting forward whenever we had chance and Mirallas was still proving to be a threat up front even though his shots were being made from distance at the time. The French also had some chances on goal but luckily for us they were not on target. We had yet another chance at the Marseille end, Mirallas again from the edge of the area with a powerful shot which was unfortunately directly into the goalkeepers hands.

So as the first half drew to a close, it was fair to say that the French had more chances on goal than us but also their efforts were largely weak efforts with only the odd dangerous play. To say that this was our first competitive match in 149 days and only our second match in 23 days, we could be happy with our first half display. Back to the game though and the 45 minute mark saw another free kick to the French and another counter attack by ourselves which ended in a free kick of our own on the edge of the area. The kick was unfortunately saved and proved to be the last act of the first half. 0-0 at halftime!!

The second half was started off by Marseille this time although we again took control of the ball and sent it into their box only to see our players crowded out and unable to get any chances away. We followed this up by trying to get the ball down the flanks but again we got so far down the pitch before losing possession and letting the French gain the ball. Unfortunately Marseille manage to open the scoring with a close range shot in the 51st minute from Lucho Gonzalez and we found ourselves behind in the match. This was somewhat unfair for us but we had to bounce back quickly. Unfortunately we didn't close down the player and we were punished for a lapse in concentration.

To try and alter the game, Yeste was taken off for Djebbour and it was hoped that this change would give us some impetus. We still found that Marseille were coming forward though and had another chance from a free kick. We weren't impotent though and were still pressing for an equaliser, getting the ball up the pitch and around their box whenever possible. To help the team regain control of the game, we made two substitutions in the 67th minute, Jean Makoun and Ariel Ibagasa coming on for Fuster and Fejsa. Marseille started to fall back now to protect their lead.

As the game started to move into the final phase, we won a free kick on the edge of the area after Morel fouled Modesto. The shot rocketed against the wall and out, winning us a corner which we couldn't convert. After more midfield play, Djebbour had a magnificent chance to equalise after Torosidis crossed into the box for him. Djebbour went for the touch when perhaps he should have tried the header and scuffed it over the bar. More attacks for us followed with the French now counter-attacking but we just couldn't get that ball on target.

During the last minutes of normal time, we throw more attacks forward but it doesn't look like we will get anything from the match. Our players are looking like they are running out of steam and our lack of match fitness is starting to show. We kept going forward but it was going to take something special to get anything from this match now. We have another chance from a corner but again can't get anything from the situation. Just at the stroke of 90 minutes, Fanni is sent off for a dangerous challenge and gives us a chance on goal from a free kick but find the ball unfortunately being cleared and we miss out again. The game finishes after 4 minutes of extra time and desperate clearances from Marseille.
It was a very disappointing result but it was a result that we didn't really deserve. We made one mistake in the match and got punished for it whilst at the other end, we just had some atrocious luck...

Olympiakos 0-1 Marseille
51' Gonzalez.

Potential lineup for Marseille

According to Gavros newspaper, we are going to go with the standard 4-2-3-1 formation for tonights opening game in the Champions League. The lineup they have printed indicates that we will start with Costanzo in goal and in front of him a back line of Torosidis, Mellberg, Papadopoulos and Holebas. For the two holding midfielders we will be utilising Modesto and Fejsa, whilst on the wings will be Abdoun (right) and Yeste (left). Fuster will take his usual role as the attacking midfielder and the lineup completed by Mirallas operating alone.

Tonights game could be one of the most important of the entire season so I hope that we start with a fine victory.

Olympiakos vs Marseille : Sold out

The game against Olympique Marseille on the 13th September looks to be a sell-out. The club had arranged for a large number of tickets to be available from 10am this morning for purchases from the internet. By 12pm, those tickets had all gone and the demand was so high that the ticket website itself crashed several times through the volume of traffic.
It looks then that the game will be sold out and tickets are almost unavailable for anyone unlucky enough to have missed their chance.
