Valencia 79-85 Olympiakos

Olympiakos played Valencia tonight, eventually winning 79-85 and ensuring qualification for the next round. Our next aim will be to beat Fenerbahce Ulker so that we finish first in the group.

Olympiakos began with a basic five of Spanoulis, Teodosic, Papanikolaou, Nielsen and Bourousis but after the first five minutes had a problem in penetrating the defence of the Spanish team. Valencia took a slight lead early on  before Bourousis helped reduce the score back to 12-11 by the 7th minute. Spanoulis then helped the team get into the front for the first time before Gordon, Papaloukas and Nesterovic allowed us to get 15-20 in front. A quick counter by Valencia brought the score back to 17-20 at the end of the first period.

For the second quarter, Ivkovic introduced Erceg into the team and the Serb repaid his choice with some red-hot play alongside Papaloukas and Spanoulis. Nesterovic in defence, closed down the defence well and stopped a lot of the Valencia attacks from happening. However Valencia did manage to make some headway exploiting some of our more hasty attacks and taking advantage of some errors made by Mavrokefalidis and Teodosic, gaining a 9 point break and bringing the score back to 25-26. Olympiakos however managed to sort themselves our and gained a 6 point break of their own before allowing Valencia back into the game. Thus, the second period continued in this style of play until the half time klaxon was sounded at a scoreline of 37-37.

At halftime, Ivkovic asked for an improved defence and the presence of Papaloukas and Grant helped Olympiakos keep the defence tight whilst allowing our attack to exploit the spanish defence and to bring the score to 43-46. Spanolis however was looking nervous on the court and so was replaced by Pelekanos so that we could try and find further solutions in play. Valencia unfortunately found some rhythym scoring enough points to get 6 points in front (54-48) and we looked to be in some trouble at this point. Jamon Gordon came into his own now and with enormous energy in both defence and attack decreased the score to 54-53 with just one minute of the quarter remaining. Unfortunately we then went on to miss the next three shots through Bourousis, Papaloukas and Spanoulis to allow the Spanish team to stay ahead in the quarter with 55-53.

As the last period began, the referees showwed some serious errors of judgement to allow the Spanish to get 59-53 in front after whistling for two non-existant fouls. We fought back though through Teodosic and managed to bring the scores back to within a single point before the referees again showed some serious poor calls in favour of Valencia. Teodosic continued his good work although Nielsen needed to be replaced after some poor play in this period. Two further errors by the arbitration ignored the baskets of Spanoulis and Teodosic although Nesterovic managed to close the scoring once again and get us in front with 71-73 just two and half minutes before the end of the game.
A frantic end to the game on both sides saw us finally put the game away and finish 79-85 to the good.

Olympiakos 77-62 Valencia

Olympiakos beat Power Valencia with a 15 point lead to win the 3rd game in the Euroleague.
Olympiakos initially met some difficulties from the Valencia team. We had started off with a 4-2 scoreline before allowing the Spanish team to reverse the score and take the lead 8-10. Spanoulis then took the initiative and gave our team the vital energy they had been lacking, allowing us to make a 12 point break and regain a 18-10 lead. A very low score...

Dusan Ivkovic demanded continuous pressure and concentration from our side and we indulged his demands very well. Papaloukas (marking 300 steals) organised the defence along with Nesterovic setting up the plays from the middle distance, we set up a 26-20 scoreline before continuing further and gaining 33-22 at the end.

Having options available to our attack and exploiting these fully, Olympiakos maintained a degree of safety with the scoreline of 40-32 and 44-32. Our team pressed continuously, leading the Spanish team to make errors of their own and allowing us to capitalise on them. Bourousis gained a number of points and helped Teodosic do the same so that we ended the third quarter with a 57-42 scoreline.

Our coach continued with the good organisation that he had shown so far and Valencia simply couldn't respond, the scores of 61-47 and 65-49 bear witness to that. Olympiakos showed a good performance and didn't rely on the same plays or players in tonights game. We ended up winning the match 77-62 to the good and move onto the away game against the same opponent in a couple of weeks.

Zalgiris 64-71 Olympiakos

Olympiakos was truly magnificent in the first half of last nights game and showed that it would take an easy victory. However mistakes and poor play in the second half meant that the victory was a little tighter than first anticipated.
We started the game with a simple enough plan, Olympiakos would get the ball up to the area near to the hoop with either Bourousis or Mavrokefalidis performing the strike. Unfortunately for us though, we neglected to stiffen up our defence early on and the outcome was that it was the Lithuanians who first led the game 16-11, four minutes before the end of the first quarter. Dusan Ivkovic saw the problems however and threw on Spanoulis, Nesterovic and Papaloukas to change the style of play. Our defence now overwhelmed the Lithuanians who didn't score again until the next period but also allowed us to make a twelve point break and finish the quarter 16-23 in front.

We continued with the same players during the second quarter and for the first six minutes of the period, we didn't allow Zalgiris anywhere near our basket. We made a further four point break through the hard work of Nesterovic and Spanoulis and reached an eleven point difference (16-27). Olympiakos continued playing with an emphasis on defence and with Spanoulis leading the offensive line as well, we ended up only taking six points from the Lithuanians whilst scoring seventeen during the quarter to finish the half 22-40 in front.

The second half of the game saw the points difference reach +20 for the first time (24-47) as we continued with our fine play. For our players, Milos Teodosic and Giannis Bourousis were exceptional and so we looked set on course for a fine victory. Unfortunately our performance now fell back dramatically and we allowed Zalgiris to bring the score to 36-52 some three minutes before the end of the quarter. The Lithuanians found some self-confidence and decreased our advantage to +11 points by the end of the period with a 43-54 scoreline.

The lack of concentration and mistakes which had dogged our third quarter performance now came out again in the last period. Zalgiris made a five point break and brought the points difference to just eight points (48-56) before continuing further and bringing the points difference to only three points (61-64) just some 90 seconds before the end of the match. However, Vasilis Spanoulis then managed to score a three point shot to take the score to 61-67. Zalgiris came back again but two final shots by Milos Teodosic and the important defensive play of Gordon finished the game off in our favour 64-71.

Olympiakos 70-84 Fenerbahce Ulker

Despite an overwhelming support provided by the fans of the team, Olympiakos fell to a defeat to Turkish side Fenerbahce Ulker in the Euroleague game played last night. Our fans however provided an undying support for the team and showed that we have the best supporters of any team in Europe.

Another Olympiakos team seemed to be playing in the Peace and Friendship stadium (SEF) last night and not the one which we all know and love, this Olympiakos made a lot of errors and mistakes before losing the match with a 70-84 scoreline.
Olympiakos did not start the game particularly well and the players also seemed to be showing a lot of nerves. We started off well enough initially, getting to a 5-2 score but then allowed the Turks to get a 10 point break in two minutes and fell back 5-12. The entrance of Papaloukas seemed to help us out along with some inspired leadership from Duda, we managed to stabilise the score before if got out of hand.
With our defence now playing with a marked continuity and improvement, we managed to get in front at the end of the first period with an 18-16 scoreline. We improved this to a 6 point difference (22-16) during the second quarter before Fenerbahce broke back and leapt in front with a 27-33 score. Vasilis Spanoulis now showed his own ability and Olympiakos managed to get a 6 point break to tie the score at 33-33 as we went into halftime.

The Turkish side imposed themselves on us in the third quarter and initially led with 39-42 before we fought back to 43-42 some six minutes before the end of the third quarter. Fenerbahce again came at us gaining a minor points advantage (50-51) by the 28 minute mark. We did however manage to score two decent baskets from Halperin and Spanoulis with grab 5 points just a minute before the hooter which marked the end of the third quarter and us winning slightly at 58-55. The game was then set up for a dynamic last period...

The last quarter started off with a point-point scoring before the Turks started to get themselves together some five minutes before the end of the match (65-69). Olympiakos now showed their nerves and started to make mistake after mistake in the arena allowing Fenerbahce to get 8 points in front (65-73). We then totally collapsed and looked tragic in the remainder of the period, the Turks went ten points in front (68-78) before winning the match eventually 70-84.

Olympiakos 89-82 Virtus Roma

We achieved our objective tonight and with victory over Virtus Roma, finished the group phase top of the table. Olympiakos started the game quite well, especially in the attack quickly building up an 18-8 lead by the 5' mark. However we were defensively poor and by the end of the first quarter, we had allowed Roma to equal us in the score 22-22.

Our coach Dudu, tried mixing up the team with the inclusion of Keselj, Nesterovic and Papaloukas however it was clear that we were playing somewhat nervously with the result that Virtus Roma kept the scoreline tight (28-26 at 14 minutes). The introduction of Teodosic brought some further defensive errors however he did also bring us 10 points almost on his own. He was aided in the attack by Keselj and Erceg and we did finally manage to tighten up the defence so that when the half time sounded the score was 45-37 in our favour.

After a delayed break at halftime, we came out but didn't change our output in our game. Nesterovic (with Keselj and Bourousis) increased the points diffential to 10 by the 26th minute (56-46) however defensively we made the same mistakes time and time again. A late flourish by Papaloukas allowed us to get an 11 point difference by the end of the 3rd quarter and we finished 64-53 to the good.

Spanoulis made the last quarter his own by scoring 8 points on his own (reaching a 15 point difference by the 34' mark) however we still managed to make several defensive mistakes and allowed Roma back into the game. Nesterovic and Spanoulis continued the good play but the score differential dropped to 11 points with a 79-68 scoreline and then a 83-72 score. We managed to keep a serious outlook to the game though and managed to maintain an advantage over Roma who first dropped the points differential to +10 (88-78) and then +7 (89-82) by the time the final hooter sounded.
The victory means we enter the last 16 teams topping our group.

Olympiakos 7-9 Partizan

Although the mens polo team tried, they failed to avoid defeat from Partizan for the 3rd match of the Euroleague. The Serbians managed to enter the game harder and it was simply this which led to their victory.
The poor performance in the first two 'oktalepta' led directly to our loss - scoring only one goal and losing 5 instead. However we managed to wake up in the second half of the game and impressed in the 3rd and 4th periods. Unfortunately it was simply too late to win the game.

Unicaja Malaga 76-74 Olympiakos

Despite returning back from a terrible defecit of 17 points to even lead the game close to the end, we ended up losing the match by the closest of scores. Our 'Erythroleukoi' with Bourousis, Keselj, Panaikolaou and Glyniadakis did not start the game well as although they play well with passion, we made too many errors. Malaga were not slow to pick up on our mistakes and opened up a 11-4 lead whilst our own players did not seem to react fast enough. The entrance of Papaloukas and Erceg helped the teams play though and we soon decreased the lead to 14-10 before finally tying the first quarter 17-17.

After the first quarter, we did seem to learn from our mistakes and allowed Malaga to run a lot of plays past us. The result of this was that Malaga soon opened up a 28-22 lead and although Teodosic and Erceg both played reasonably well in this quarter, we could only help at closing the score somewhat (31-28 in the 16th minute).
Unfortunately we were poor defensively and only slightly better in the attack. Teodosic and Erceg again helped decrease the score but at the break we were 42-37 down.

The second half and the third quarter saw our continuity of play suffer even further as we simply could not get going at all. Malaga took advantage of our problems to build an 11 point lead (52-41) and even increased this to 14 points before we managed to finally return to a -12 point difference as the third quarter ended 62-50. Nesterovic and Gordon were the players most at fault for the third quarter but the simple problem was none of our players particularly played well during this quarter and worse was still to come.

The last quarter started off badly for us with our points differential getting even worse to -17 points (67-50) however the introduction of Spanoulis, Nesterovic and Erceg allowed us to return into the game and in the next few minutes we scored 15 points to Unicaja's 2, with only three and a half minutes remaining we had managed to get back into the game with a 69-65 scoreline. Keselj and Erceg then helped propel us into the lead for the first time in the match with a 69-71 scoreline.
However, Malaga managed to once again get in front of the match with a 75-71 score as we entered the last minute of the match. We grabbed a further three points from a play but then missed the last ball of the match (taken from 9m out) to lose the game 76-74.

Olympiakos 86-69 Brose Baskets

Olympiakos did not meet many problems in overcoming Bamberg in a fine 86-69 victory which along with a defeat for Real Madrid placed us in first place in the Euroleague group.

With the support of over 1500 schoolchildren from Rentis, Glyfada, Piraeus, Faliro, Keratsini and elsewhere also present alongside the usual impressive supporters, we made an uninspiring start to the game itself. Bamberg, as expected, entered the arena quite hard and moving the ball around quite well, imposed their own play onto us. The German team opened the scoring and soon mounted up a 7-12 advantage although we tightened our defence and with Nesterovic scoring five points by himself managed to bring the score down to 14-16 before finally finishing the first quarter with a 18-18 score.

When the second quarter started, we saw Mavrokefalidis and Papaloukas take some initiative in the game and put our team in front of the Germans with some impressive scoring. Bourousis also entered the game at this point and helped in the construction of some vital plays and helping moving the game quickly. Before long, we had moved in front score-wise and had reached a 7 point advantage (26-19).
Papaloukas and Mavrokefalidis also then combined together to really put the pressure on Bamberg increasing the score to 11 points (39-28) and finally 14 points at the halftime break (48-34).

During the second half of the game, Olympiakos did not lower its speed or its attack with Mavrokefalidis continuing his good work in front of the opponents area. Bamberg did have a temporary fightback to decrease the scoreline to 58-47 (+11) but the difference in quality was restored by Bourousis and the scoreline increased once again to 66-51 at the end of the period.

The fourth quarter saw us basically finish off the game although we fell back in performance in the final two or three minutes of the game. Again, Bourousis performed very well (along with Papanikolaou during this last quarter) and we finially finished the game with a 86-69 scoreline.

EuroLeague Basketball : Olympiakos 86-78 Charleroi

We achieved our objective of victory when playing Charleroi tonight and maintain our position at the top of the Euroleague group. We actually won the victory with some realitve ease although it had to be admitted that we did not reach the standard of play that we had reached in previous matches. Still we maintained the victory despite showing some weaknesses in our defensive play.

Charleroi started the game by trying to mark Nielsen out as the danger man but we quickly countered that by changing our playmaker to being Nesterovic instead and quickly built up a lead of 23-8 points. Charleroi didn't help themselves by creating 3 fouls in just three minutes and it looked like that victory was going to be certain from the start of the match.

However, after the first quarter Charleroi returned into the action and reduced our lead by 23-18 at the start of the second quarter. From this point onwards until half time, the point differential was never great than 10 points and Charleroi was pushing us hard in this quarter although we had returned to using Matt Nielsen as the primary scorer and Vasilis Spanoulis as his backup. It was obvious to most of the spectators that we were not playing with any great urgency and we reached halftime with only a 9 point lead with the scores 42-33.

After the half time break, we made some strides forward in increasing the point differential with Robe Nesterovic making a quality performance in the third quarter and pushing the score to 64-48. Nestorovic managed to achieve 8 point-breaks during this period.
In the fourth and final quarter, we let our advantage slide somewhat with the score changing to 69-59 and then 72-65 although Milos Teodosic managed to stabilise the team by some good play and we finally finished the match with a 86-78 scoreline. Not a brilliant performance by any stretch of the imagination, our defence was very shaky on a number of occasions but we got the victory that we deserved and we move onto our Rome visit from here.

Illness ahead of Charleroi

Mavrokefalidis has returned to the squad ahead of this wednesday's Euroleague game with Charleroi and will be ready for inclusion in the squad. In an interview where this news was announced, Dusan Ivkovic also explained that both Bourousis and Spanoulis are suffering with fever and because of this, the medical staff have taken the precaution of vaccinating all of the players.
Erceg is considered doubtful to make his attendence in the game.
