AO Kerkyra 0-2 Olympiakos

Written by
Todays game comes direct from Corfu where we play AO Kerkyra in matchday 17 of the league. We will be playing away from home and need a win to maintain the five point advantage at the top of the league.

As for the game itself, we started off at a low tempo, slowly probing the Kerkyra defence whilst the Kerkyra side were more rushed in testing our defences. In fact after a couple of minutes, it was clear that Kerkyra were doing a lot of the pressing and attacking whilst we seemed content to be sitting back and soaking up the pressure for some reason. We were performing some attacking when the occasion asked but we were not making our presence felt on the field as yet.

After the first fifteen minutes, we were seemingly no closer to a goal than we had been at the start of the match. We were making more effort to get the ball forward and playing a little bit more settled though. Kerkyra are still looking dangerous although we are doing a little more attacking and trying to get the ball forward. It was the 26th minute before we managed to get four corners in a row against Kerkyra, all of which were unsuccessful unfortunately whilst Pantelic had also a couple of half chances on goal but has been closed down too much so far.

We are continuing with the attacking play and we seem to have taken over in this respect. Kerkyra are doing very little attacking of their own whilst we are controlling a lot of the play and getting the ball forward on almost every chance. We are shooting too long though and not creating any close range chances but at least we are creating chances now. The best of the half so far coming from Mirallas who did manage to break into the box but then shot directly at the keeper. Another chance comes right on the 45' mark when Pantelic is fouled from behind on the edge of the box but the subsequent free kick was wasted by shooting against the wall. The half finished at 0-0 after 2 minutes of extra time and we look frustrated with our chances as we go to the dressing rooms.

Kerkyra have a couple of chances early on in the second half but luckily failed to score from either of them. In reply we continue with our attacking play, winning a corner (which we didn't convert) and harrying the Kerkyra defence whenever the opportunity presented itself. We did eventually get the goal in the 54th minute from a free kick delivered from the left hand side which Pantelic headed into the net to open the scoring. The scoreline was almost doubled just a minute later by our team but the desperate defending of Kerkyra stopped us from scoring again.

As the game continued onwards, our attacking play remained at a quite high level and we found chances being created by both Riera and Pantelic (Riera's shot in particular testing the keeper). Kerkyra by comparison were still not creating anything of any worth and so we were able to slow down the pace somewhat and still remain quite safe. When we next attacked through Pantelic and Mirallas, we were able to double the scoreline. In this attack Pantelic broke away from the defence on the right and thundered into the box. As the keeper came to intercept, Pantelic calmly passed left to the unmarked Mirallas who smacked it into the net (perhaps with a little too much force).
Just two minutes later, we tried the same trick again only with the roles reversed (Mirallas starting with the ball), this time however their keeper managed to intercept the ball during the pass.

We are now in the last fifteen minutes of the match and make our first substitution of the game with Mirallas being replaced with Fetfatzidis whilst Holebas is also being readied. Fetfatzidis makes his presence felt almost immediately with a superb shot on goal which only just goes over the net. Our second substitution (Riera off for Holebas) is now made, Riera has not had a great game unfortunately and Holebas likewise makes his announcement as soon as he is on the pitch with a shot on goal (a pretty awful shot mind) (Marko Pantelic off for Kristian Nemeth is our last substitution made).
We haven't finished with the attacking as yet with Fetfatzidis making a good dribbling run into the box before being dispossesed and a later goalmouth fight as we try to get the ball across the line but this would be as close as it got in the remainder of the game. The match finished after 3 minutes of extra time and we could be happy with the win at least.
