Inter Milan 2-2 Olympiakos

Todays game came from Geneva where we played Inter Milan in the final friendly of the preseason. We started off with an inpromptu lineup due to some injury problems and so we went out with a lineup of :-
Costanso in Goals; Modesto, Papadopoulos, Mellberg and Marcano in Defence; Fejsa and Hurtado as the holding midfielders; Fuster, Yeste and Fetfatzidis in the front of midfield and finally Mirallas as the lone striker.

As far as the game itself went, we matched Inter Milan across the field in the early part of the first half. Inter were obviously the most powerful opponent we had faced in our preseason but we held our own defensively whilst still getting forward and threatening at times. The Italian side did get more chances at attacking than our previous opponents but this was to be expected. When we got forward ourselves, we ended up wasting possession on too many occasions and this resulted in Inter making more attacks. To be honest, I think we were the better of the two sides and certainly the ones who were going to make something happen but with subsequent events, it was not to be.
Just on the stroke of 30 minutes, Mellberg managed to get himself sent off for two yellow card offences. Unfortunately both cards were warranted and so we now had to play for an entire 60 minutes with only a10 players and it would be very unlikely that we would win this game now. Inter started to take advantage of the disparity in numbers and pressurise our defence more often whilst we switched to a defend and counter-attack style of play.
Inter had the closest chance of opening the scoring in the 38th minute when one of their player broke through our defence and tried to slot the ball to the side of Costanzo (luckily missing). We were unfortunately having trouble in keeping the ball now and this was leading to more and more Inter possession. Thankfully they don't manage to score and while we didn't create much in the last fifteen minutes of the first half, we can be reasonably happy with the scoreline so far.

We made one change at halftime with the substitution of Fuster for Maniatis before then we kicked off, winning a goal almost straight away - 10 men or not!!!!! We had won a free kick on the left hand side of the pitch and as this was played into the box, Fejsa was left unmarked and able to nod the goal into the net. 0-1!
Inter try to fight back winning a free kick of their own and pressuring our goalmouth but without any success. We on the other hand we're building our plays from the midfield and trying to thread balls forward to Mirallas. We certainly weren't just letting the Italians have it all their own way.

On the 60 minute mark, we made three further changes with Fetfatzidis making way for Javito, Yeste for Holebas and Papadopoulos for Papazoglou. Inter again came forward only to see their efforts saved by Costanso (impressively it has to be said). We then managed to counter attack all the way up the pitch but unfortunately only won a corner for our troubles. (Mirallas off for Pantelic 66'). This was a little infuriating to see as Mirallas was wide open on the counter attack and yet the ball was passed to a player who was being marked and had to work hard for the corner. A little more thought and we could have been 2-0 up!
We do get 2-0 up in the event though with a low shot from Modesto. We had worked a counter attack up the pitch via Pantelic who then crossed low across the box. The ball was kicked out as far as Modesto who controlled with his first touch and shot with his second. The ball went past the flailing keeper to the immense displeasure of the largely Italian crowd.
By the time that the game was in the final 15 minutes, Inter were now chasing two goals and we were still looking more dangerous on the attack than Milan even with 10 men. Inter eventually managed to get one goal back with a pass from midfield and one snap touch from their forward which went under our goalkeeper. They had another effort on goal through a header just minutes later but this time Costanso held onto the ball. Inter seemed to be inspired by the goal once more and came at us in numbers. This however led to more counter attacks for our team, sometimes coming very close to being a good attempt on goal but ultimately unsuccessful.

With five minutes left, we had a chance on goal through Holebas but this went over the net from a tight angle. Inter threw everything at us in the closing minutes of the match but even then we managed to counter up the pitch and win a corner from a Pantelic shot which deflected behind. In the event, Inter did manage to score an equaliser right at the death of normal time from a scramble in the box but there was no chance that the shot would be saved from that close a range.
The final whistle was sounded after four minutes of extra time and the game ended 2-2, we could be very happy with our display in the second half. It's a shame to have conceded an equaliser at the end but thats football sometimes.

Olympiakos (Valverde): Costanso, Modesto, Mellberg, Papadopoulos (57' Papazoglou), Marcano, Hurtado, Fejsa (76' Potouridis), Fetfatzidis (56' Javito), Fuster (46' Maniatis), Yeste (57' Holebas), Mirallas (63' Pantelic).

Olympiakos sign Andreas Tatos from Atromitos

Olympiakos has announced the capture of Andreas Tatos from Atromitos. The player signed on a four year deal but will immediately return on loan to Atromitos for this season.
This is a good move for the club, we get a fine quality young player and let another club develop him for a year. Once next summer has arrived we can then evaluate him and see how he plays in pre-season. This is obviously preferable to keeping a player at the club but having very little chance to play at all for an entire year.

Olympiakos 1-0 Galatasaray

Todays match came from  Karaiskaki stadium where we faced Galatasaray in our penultimate friendly of the season. Although we have a couple of injuries to the squad, we turned out as complete a squad as we could in the circumstances. The starting squad consisted of Costanzo in goals, a defence of Maniatis, Papadopoulos, Marcano and Holebas. Modesto and Fejsa were in the centre of midfield whilst Mirallas and Riera were the two wingers. The front two were Pantelic leading the line and Fuster behind him in the attacking midfield role.

As for the match itself, we scored with just 36 seconds on the clock!! Although Galatasaray had kicked off the game, we managed to grab the ball, knock it forward to Mirallas who then beat his markers, sped into the box and cracked it past the keeper. Galatasaray seemed shellshocked by the goal and for the first five minutes it was simply one way traffic as we won corners, free kicks and chances around their area. In comparison the Turks passing and general play was very poor but by 10 minutes into the game, they had settled a little into the match. We came close to a second goal in the 13th minute with Fuster breaking through the Galatasaray defence but unfortunately shooting wide.

As the match went onwards, we started to play a counter attacking style and although this allowed Galatasaray more time on the ball, we were still the more dangerous team by far, still winning corners, making runs at their goal and the odd shot on goal. One of the better chances in the 24th minute with a close range flick from Pantelic which was saved by the keeper with some difficulty. In a similar way, Riera also had a shot on goal (wide) but as the 30 minute mark approached we were still in charge of the game and making all the chances.

In the last 15 minutes of the first half Galatasaray came forward en-masse and started to really pressurise for the equaliser. This gave our defenders plenty of work which they had been lacking so far. Some of the defending was desperate at times but they managed to stand firm and to not concede any goals at this stage of the match. We missed another golden chance to gain a second goal with a Mirallas run in the 43rd minute which beat the keeper but the shot drifted wide of the net. The half ended after a single minute of extra time and we could be very happy with our first half display.

During the second half, we made the substitution of Javito for Pantelic initially and then kicked off. Galatasaray continued to perform the majority of the attacking play in a similar way to how they had finished the first half with ourselves counter-attacking whenever possible. The turks managed to get the ball into the net on the 55th minute but saw their headed effort (from a corner) ruled offside. In order to break up the Galatasaray possession of the ball, we introduced Yeste for Fuster and Hurtado for Fejsa in order to freshen up the midfield.

Just on the hour mark, Mirallas made a stupid response on one of the Turk players who had been niggling him during play and kicked him, he was yellowed for this and was probably very lucky that this was not a competitive match as a Red card would probably have been shown in that instance. The match itself was starting to turn pretty bad tempered with Fatih Terim sounding off on the sidelines whilst the Galatasaray players tried every trick in the book to rile our players. We took the opportunity to substitute Mirallas for Grbic at the first opportunity. Another chance on goal went begging when Riera tried to lob the keeper having broken through the defence only to see his effort go over (possibly through cramp as he was almost instantly subbed off for Papazoglou afterwards.

By the time that the game reached the last fifteen minutes, the Galatasaray players were flopping all over the pitch and simulating injury to get free kicks anywhere in our half. To be fair, they were still doing the majority of the attacking in the game but as they were chasing an equaliser, this is not particularly surprising. We made our final substitution in the 83rd minute with one substitute Hurtado being replaced by another Potouridis. Hurtado looked like he had taken a bad knock and so he was subbed off for safety's sake. We have a final chance to score from a free kick but in this case Yeste shoots directly against the wall and we lose out. The game ends after three minutes of extra time and we have earned our win. We dominated the game for half an hour before changing to a counter attack style and performed very well in breaking up the Galatasaray attacks.

* As a final note, our goalkeeper Costanzo fills me with absolute horror. He seems to flap at balls, is too eager to run out of the box, has butter fingers and on one occasion distributed the ball to Maniatis who was hemmed in the corner and marked by two players. We're in for a long long season if he is to be our first choice keeper. It may be too early to have a downer on him but he looks shockingly shit.

Olympiakos: Costanso, Maniatis, Modesto, Fejsa (57' Hurtado, 84' Potouridis), Pantelic (46' Javito), Riera (70' Papazoglou), Mirallas (67' Grbic), Fuster (57' Yeste), Holebas, Papadopoulos, Marcano.

Anticipation builds for the Galatasaray game

The demand for tickets to attend Wednesday's friendly game against Galatsaray is expected to be large. Some tickets went on sale on Friday and over 500 were sold to some fans who had envisaged the rush. The booths have been closed since Saturday and will re-open tomorrow where it is expected that sales will be very brisk.

This is our final friendly game at Karaiskaki in this particular pre-season and it will be our penultimate friendly as well. Coach Ernesto Valverde is widely tipped to be starting with as strong a squad as possible although we do have some injuries in the shape of Torosidis, Ibagasa and Djebbour.

PAS Giannena 0-0 Olympiakos

Olympiakos gave a poor performance in todays 0-0 draw with PAS Giannena in the Zosimadon stadium. We didn't play with any great teamwork in the first half and although the second half was slightly better it was not a great improvement. PAS came close on a couple of occasions but all in all we failed to stamp our mark on the game and the result was a very sloppy showing and our 6th friendly without a victory.

We started off in a 4-4-1-1 with Daskalakis in goals, Maniatis, Papazoglou, Markano and Valerianos in defence. In the midfield we saw Javito, Ibagasa, Hurtado and Riera with Fuster and Pantelic completing off the lineup. We swapped this to a lineup of Megyeri, Modesto, Mellberg, Potouridis, Holebas, Grbic, Fejsa, Yeste, Fetfatzidis, Fuster and Mirallas at halftime after it was evident that Valverde was not happy with what he saw.
Unfortunately this report is very sparse as there was very little to talk about. The performance was sub-par and no-one from our team particularly distinguished themselves.
We move on from this to Wednesday's home match against Galatasaray.
