Volleyball Cup : Panellenios 0-3 Olympiakos

Thrylos left Kypseli as winners today after defeating Panellenios by three sets to nil in the quarter finals of the volleyball cup. The first two sets of the game were easy enough with us winning the first 15-25 and the second 20-25.
In the third set though, we relaxed a little too much and found ourselves behind for the first time in the match with an 8-7 scoreline. However, we soon recovered to 12-16 before finally winning the set and the match 21-25.
With the match comes the place in the semi-finals and we will find out who the opponent is on Friday.

1st Set : Panellenios 15-25 Olympiakos

POA - Retribution is coming!

This weekend sees us play the Vazeloi in our stadium. We have already sold out of tickets (we sold out at the end of last week) well in advance of the game and we can anticipate that the stadium will be packed with 34,000 screaming fans as this marks the highlight of our season.
The anticipation is massive and only a victory will be tolerated in this game, any other result and some serious questions will need to be asked. However with the team playing well and with the help of our fanatical fans, it would appear that a victory for Olympiakos is the likely outcome.

As we have half a week to go until the game, we see some players starting to overcome their injury problems, namely Moises Hurtado. Hurtado had been absent since the new year but today he managed to train regularly with the first team. He probably won't be fit enough to start the game but he will be able to provide another option from the bench.

As regards the team and the likely lineup, it appears that we will play with a similar formation as was seen at the start of the Aris game. Pardo is likely to start as the keeper behind a back four of Torosidis, A.Papadopoulos, Mellberg and Raul Bravo. The two defensive midfielders are very likely to be Francois Modesto and Ariel Ibagaza bring continuity to their existing good performances. In front of midfield we are likely to see Rafik Djebbour again filling in on the right wing, Riera on the left wing and Fuster in the centre. Kevin Mirallas will be the lone attacker once again.

With this lineup, the coach and the fans, can we really expect the Green Rabbits to withstand us?

Amateur Sports - Weekend of 12th and 13th February

This weekend, in addition to the regular Basketball and Football matches, we also held games in the Amateur department :-

The mens polo team destroyed NO Patron by a 19-3 scoreline at home on Saturday with our team not even conceding a point until the 3rd period of the match. Instead we ended up with two very one sided sets and a walkover of a game.
The womens team however travelled to Germany where they faced european competition from Bayer Uerdingen in the first leg of the last 8. The girls ended up beating the German team by 18 points to 8 and following the formality of the return leg in Piraeus, they will be in the final 4 of the competition soon enough.
Unfortunately our mens Volleyball team lost against Kifissia by a 3-2 scoreline in matchday 15 of the competition whilst our Womens team play AEK today.

Ikarus Kallithea 56-102 Olympiakos

Olympiakos played some absolutely magnificent basketball to truly annihilate Ikarus Kallithea by a 102-56 scoreline and also showed themselves ready with the Euroleague game against Valencia on Thursday evening. With the win we remain alone at the top of the table and unbeaten in the A1 basket season so far.
The team was in no mood for messing around today and quickly assembled a ten point difference in the scoreline within 5 minutes of the match starting. Halperin in particular making a great performance in tonights game and helping the team obtain their advantage. So our team ended up finishing the first quarter with over double the score of Kallithea and a healthy 17 point advantage as the scores reached 14-31.

We did not relax for the second period with an exceptional defence and again Halperin's tireless and perfect performance (aided by Teodosic). We obtained a twenty point advantage in this period with Spanoulis scoring to reach 14-35. Three minutes later, it was +31 (17-48) and we ended up reaching the halftime klaxon at 27-56.

The second half saw us continue with our onslaught with Nesterovic, Teodosic and Halperin all combining together to eventually reach at +40 advantage (42-82) as the third quarter finished. The final 10 minutes were just as bad for Kallithea and we ended up with almost double their scoreline as the game finished 56-102.

Ikarus Kallithea 56-102 Olympiakos
1st Quarter : Kallithea 14-31 Olympiakos
2nd Quarter : Kallithea 27-56 Olympiakos
3rd Quarter : Kallithea 42-82 Olympiakos
4th Quarter : Kallithea 56-102 Olympiakos

Aris 1-2 Olympiakos

For todays game, we go to Salonika for the away game against Aris FC. We have a couple of changes in the team as Torosidis failed to make the team through injury and has been replaced by Maniatis. Djebbour is starting on the right wing and Mirallas won an appeal this morning as he was informed about his suspension for this game late by the EPO. He will therefore lead the line after being cleared to play.

We start the game off at a fast pace but although we spend the majority of the first ten minutes in possession of the ball, we cannot make our superiority pay and grab the opening goal. We do break into the box and on occassions look very menacing indeed but we haven't made any shots on goal in the opening exchange. Aris by comparison look happy to soak up the pressure and counter attack when they can.

Unfortunately it is Aris who open the scoring when we fail to effectively clear the ball following an Aris attack. We get the ball so far up the pitch before it is lost and pumped back into the box. Our defenders then manage to lose out in the aerial challenge and Aris defender Neto is then free to shoot over Pardo and into the top of the net. The goal comes totally against the run of play and is a shock to our players who then take a few minutes to compose themselves afterwards.

After the goal, we do manage to eventually get ourselves together and then start to pressurise the Aris goal. Aris then break up our attacks with some counter attacks of their own and the outcome is frustration for our players. Djebbour comes close to opening the scoring with a long range effort but we then have to make our first substitution of the match when Mirallas is withdrawn through injury and replaced with Jaouod Zairi.

The half continues onwards with ourselves doing the lions share of any attacking and Aris simply sitting back and then countering when they can. We are looking very shaky defensively when Aris do counter but it is not long before we have tied the game score. With our goal, we build up the play on the left wing before switching the ball to Fuster on the edge of the area. Fuster passes right to Ibagaza who chips the ball over the defence to Djebbour who has broken free of the defence. Djebbour fires the ball home and we deservedly score the equaliser. The half finishes after 2 minutes of extra time and there is nothing else to note.

The second half sees us resume the offensive once more and we are very unlucky not to grab a penalty when Fuster is dragged down in the box just two minutes after the start. Aris then have chances of their own but shoot over whilst we manage to contain their other attacks with ease. We again break into their area and have a player barged in the back, but again - no penalty. Apart from this and numerous stops whistled by the referee, we are fighting for control of the ball with Aris.

After a short while we start to take over in the game and launch wave after wave of attacks at the Aris goalmouth to try and break the deadlock. we break into the box numerous times but cannot manage to get the final shot away on goal. We make our second substitution in the 70th minute with Maniatis being replaced with Torosidis whilst Nery Castillo, a former Olympiakos player who was once a mainstay of the team, comes on for Aris. Torosidis has only just come on for the team when we grab the important second goal to go into the lead. The ball is crossed into the centre of the box by Ibagaza where Djebbour is waiting marked by two Aris defenders. Djebbour manages to get a touch with his head on the ball and knock it to the right where Fuster is waiting. Fuster makes an acrobatic kick straight at the keeper who spills the ball into the back of the net. 1-2!!!

Holebas is our final substitution, coming on in the 83rd minute for Raul Bravo. Despite being in the lead now, we continue to attack to try and grab a third goal and give us a two goal advantage. Aris, who have now used all their substitutions to throw on more attackers looks decidedly worried as we go forward and they have to backtrack up the field. Aris do come close to our goal at times but we also help relieve the pressure by attacking as much as possible. The game ends after 3 minutes of extra time and we gain the 3 points here and move now into the derby against the Rabbits

Olympiakos 1-0 Xanthi

We play Skoda Xanthi today, at home, in the 21st matchday of the season. I hope for a decent game today however Xanthi have been nothing short of mediocre all season and our own style of play since Christmas has been pretty rotten too (although we are still picking up the points). After our elimination from the Greek Cup, I hope to see a transformation in our team and that we will start to play as a team of champions. It is a bright sunny afternoon, the stadium is about three quarters full, the fans at either end are in voice so lets get a victory here and restore some belief in our team. The game takes place after a minutes tribute to the victims of 8th February.

We kick the game off and spend the first few minutes trying to put our stamp onto the game. However, we fail to do this quickly and even after the first five minutes or so, the ball is still bobbling about midfield. We de have some build up play developing, including a cross from the left courtesy of Riera and a long shot on goal from Fuster which is easily saved but generally we don't make anything of note. Possibly our best build up play of this period is an over the top to Pantelic which is tackled out for a penalty but that really is all.

Even after the ten minute mark, we still have not taken control of the game and we are still pushing it around in midfield, losing possession then regaining it later. We are however getting the ball well into the Xanthi half and building up play not too far away from their goal. It is unfortunate then that our passing into the box is too reliant on the long ball and these passes are being cleared too often from play. Xanthi for their part have been pretty terrible, they've created very little offensively and they seem content at the minute to reign injury and park 10 men in the box.

One of our better chances in the half comes in the 25th minute when Riera pumps a free kick into the box from the centre of the pitch. Modesto is found on the end of the pass and he heads on goal only to see his effort hit the corner of the bar and go over and out. This effort is followed up with more confident shots on goal from our players, hardly any on target but at least we are making the chances now.

As the half continues, we are making some better chances on the Xanthi goal and more frequent chances too, the game looks like a goal is coming despite Xanthi's desperate defending. We are now dragging the ball forward and further up the pitch with each attack and we are unlucky not to be awarded an penalty in the 36th minute when Torosidis is dragged down in the box. We follow this up with a close range chance from Zairi on goal but then have to rush back to our own goalmouth when Pardo needs to make two cracking saves to avoid conceding a goal from a Xanthi counter attack.

Apart from this chance, there is nothing heard from Xanthi for the rest of the half and we go back to our play of attacking the Xanthi goal and we finally get the goal! A cross from Torosidis on the right hand side of the pitch is met by the head of Fuster at the edge of the 6 yard box, it is a quality nod from him and Xanthi concede the all important goal on the stroke of halftime.

When Xanthi kick off the second half, it does not take long for us to take over once again. We immediately attack the Xanthi goalmouth and narrowly avoid doubling our lead with a scramble in the 6 yard box which Xanthi eventually clear. Back at our end of the pitch, Pardo has to intervene oce again in a one-on-one situation when Xanthi break through our line. More end to end play sees the Xanthi keeper having to clear off the line after we come close again. It seems another goal could well be coming....   ...unfortunately it isn't coming as yet although we come agonisingly close on occasion. One of the best chances being a free kick taken on the edge of the area, passed short to Torosidis (unmarked) and then shot on goal only to see the keeper deflect it behind for a corner.

We make our first substitution in the 65th minute with Fetfatzidis replacing Zairi and right at the same minute as we make another good effort on goal with Modesto's header going wide of goal (quick stat : Olympiakos has 12 shots on goal to Xanth's 3). The substitution seems to brighten up our play quality on the right wing and this leads in turn to more chances being made on the Xanthi goal. We seem to be firing shots off at goal and passing around the 6 yard box with impunity, only the desperate last ditch defending from Xanthi avoiding the goals.

Our second substitution is made ten minutes after with Marko Pantelic leaving the pitch to applause to allow Rafik Djebbour to replace him. It doesn't take long for Djebbour to make his mark on the match, with a run into the box which threatens to increase the score but the subsequent shot is tipped wide and we are frustrated in front of goal again. Despite our frustrations though, we continue attacking whilst we ready our final substitution (Dudu - replacing Fuster) on the sidelines.

Now that we are in the last five minues of normal play, Xanthi change tack and throw everything but the kitchen sink at us to try to grab an equaliser. This leads to us playing a bit further down the pitch and not pressing their goal as much as we have been doing. We are holding up the ball well though and limiting Xanthi's final chances as we get into the three minutes of additional time. In fact, Xanthi are well marked out of the game and unable to create anything as the final whistle goes and we win 1-0 in a relatively easy (but low scoring) match.

Olympiakos 1-0 Skoda Xanthi

Olympiakos 82-63 Panionios

Olympiakos shattered Panionios with an 82-63 scoreline to remain top of the A1 league and make it 16 victories out of 16.
We seemed hungry for victory as we entered the arena and certainly looked as if we had a plan of play. Olympiakos had possession of the ball to quickly pass the ball to both Mavrokefalidis and Nesterovic who finished most of the balls. So we found that we soon made a lead of 15 points to 8. Keselj provided help to our attack but we managed to have some problems in the defence so that Panionios were allowed to get back into the game and finish the first quarter with us 25-19 ahead.
In the second quarter, our attack continued with its exemplary play and the introduction of Papaloukas and Erceg improved the situation even more allowing us to make our advantage in double digits (41-30). Teodosic, Halperin and Erceg combined together well to raise the points differential to +15 points, some five minutes before the end of the third period.
Olympiakos drowned out the players of Panionios, not allowing their players to make any shots. Our players created a lot of chances through our rigid defence and so we managed to get 67-51 in front at the end of the third period. For the final quarter, Dusan Ivkovic asked for the players to continue playing the same style and we gladly met his demands. We broke the score at 74-58 before bringing the score to +20 (78-58), two minutes before the end of the game. The final score of 82-63 reflected our dominance in the game and the difference in quality.

Olympiakos 82-63 Panionios
1st Quarter : Olympiakos 25-19 Panionios
2nd Quarter : Olympiakos 43-35 Panionios
3rd Quarter : Olympiakos 67-51 Panionios
4th Quarter : Olympiakos 82-63 Panionios

Olympiakos (Ivkovic): Papaloukas 10, Nesterovic 9, Spanoulis 4, Bourousis 3, Keselj 5, Mavrokefalidis 12, Halperin 13, Nielsen 1, Papanikolaou 5, Erceg 9, Teodosic 8, Katsivelis 2.

Preview - Matchday 21 : Olympiakos-Xanthi

Tomorrow we play Skoda Xanthi at home for Matchday 19 of the Greek Superleague. As regards the team and their preparation for this game :-
Immediately after the PAOK game, Avraam Papadopoulos picked up an ankle injury and unfortunately he didn't manage to recover in time for tomorrows game. There is a problem at centre back however as Giannis Potouridis is also confirmed out and so we are strongly expecting to see a Mellberg-Modesto combination at the back.
As for other players, Zairi complained about some chest pains but was pronounced fit for the game, whilst both Riera and Dudu completed their recovery and have been training with the team on the full schedule.
Mirallas is suspended for this game although whether he would have been fit is another question (after PAOK threw a smashed bottle at him, narrowly missing his eye)
Anyway, the 19 players for the team have been confirmed as :-
  • Goalkeepers (2) : Nikopolidis, Pardo
  • Defenders (7) : Torosidis, Mellberg, Bravo, Holebas, Maniatis, Modesto, Leandro
  • Midfielders (8) : G.Papadopoulos, Ibagaza, Fetfatzidis, Fuster, Zairi, Rommedahl, Riera, Dudu
  • Attackers (2) : Pantelic, Djebbour
It is for our team, to go out and win tomorrow and we expect them to do this convincingly.
