Real Madrid 82-68 Olympiakos

We lost our return match against Real Madrid with some poor play but since we lost with a 14 point total, we equalled the score differential of the first game and therefore remain in pole position to qualify from the group.

Olympiakos began the match making some poor choices in both attack and defence and it was not long before Real Madrid amounted a lead of 15-6. The entrance of Mavrokefalidis, Gordon and Keselj into the team made us a lot stronger in defence and we started to regain some of the lost ground getting the score to 26-20. Unfortunately Real Madrid's players continued making some damage on our team and soon brought up a 10 point difference once again.

Milos Teodosic reduced the score to 37-31 but when the half time klaxon sounded, the score was 42-34 in favour of the Spanish. In the second half, our attack started to perform much better but defensively we were still playing some terrible ball and so the score was 50-38 after just 3 minutes of the second half.

We could not manage to find any rhythm in our attack to decrease the point different and Papaloukas was seemingly still troubled from his recent wound as he wasn't able to influence the game in any major terms although we managed to reduce the points to an 8 point difference by the end of the third quarter.

The last quarter saw us make an effort to reduce the scoreline and we were partially successful in doing this before collapsing to first a 13 point difference (65-52) and then later in the quarter, a sixteen point difference (82-66). We made a final effort in the last few seconds of the game to grab the vital points to ensure the point difference was the same as the first game and at least we managed to do that.

1st Quarter : Real Madrid 24-14 Olympiakos

Olympiakos 3-2 Jastrzebski

We managed to grab our first victory in the champions league winning the game by 3 sets to 2. We had some serious trouble with the start of the first set but recovered enough to win the set with a 28-26 scoreline. The second set was easier for us and we won 25-22 but lose the third and fourth sets with 23-25 and 17-25 scores respectively.
The final round started off badly for us but similar to the first set, we countered and ultimately won the fifth set and the match with a 15-13 scoreline.

Training - Thursday 25th November

Our football team exercised today at 10.30 hours in preparation of this Saturdays game against AEK (matchday 12). The news from the training session is as follows :-
  • All of the players who took part in yesterdays game against Ergotelis followed a program of full recovery in the gym.
  • Olof Mellberg continued with his individual training including a run in the grounds without feeling any discomfort.
  • Vasilis Torosidis continued with his regime of recovery including some gym work and a run.
  • Raul Bravo actually trained with the remainder of the team in the regular session for at least part of the session. He will be scanned later on today so that his recovery can be monitored.
  • Giorgos Galitsios suffered an injury at the end of the session. The first thoughts are that he has suffered a small tear in his left calf and he will need to be closely examined over the next few days to see if any further assistance is required.

Tomorrow we will complete our weeks training with a session starting at 19.30 and immediately afterwards the team of 18 players will be named.

Ergotelis 0-2 Olympiakos (postponed second half...)

We won the game today eventually despite Ergotelis playing with 10 men in the box for almost the entire game. This was obviously the second half of the game which was postponed from 10 days ago and we only had 45 minutes to get the win.

The game itself was played by ourselves with a very attacking outlook and we started to make some efforts on their goal from only the 4th minute (actually 49th minute) onwards with a smart cross from Modesto onto the head of Pantelic. Ergotelis didn't seem to have any answers on our attacks apart from to come in on our players with some atrocious tackling.

Eventually though, even with the defensive and cynical playing style from Ergotelis, we managed to grab the opening goal with a cross from Riera onto the head of Pantelic who simply smacked it into the net. This goal made Ergotelis come out of their half for once and try to attack us in the last ten minutes of the match but this simply led to Valverde changing around the team and frustrate their team further.
The game was decided by Fuster who scored a fine goal to double the scoreline and ensured that we are still at the top of the league.

Olympiakos (4-4-1-1) : Pardo, Modesto, Potouridis, A.Papadopoulos, Holebas, Rommedahl (90'+ Galitsios), Riera, Dudu, Hurtado, Pantelic (88' Fuster), Mirallas (90' Mitroglou)

Training - Tuesday 16th November

Our team continued with the weeks training and exercised at 19:00 today in preparation for the weekends game against PAOK (Sunday 19:30 - Matchday 11). The details of the training are as follows :-
  • Kevin Mirallas was suffering with some pains in his abdomen and followed a personal training program.

  • Olof Mellberg also followed a personal program, his training included a run around the grounds and it is expected that he will be ready to play in the regular team by the end of the week.
  • Ariel Ibagaza went to the hospital today for a further scan on his leg. The ultra sound scan showed a significant improvement with his injury and therefore he will follow an intensive treatment program of gym work and running.
  • Raul Bravo is already following a program of gym work and exercises in the swimming pool. Tomorrow he will have his own examination and his reintroduction back into the team will be checked.
  • Lastly Nikos Papadopoulos followed his own course of treatment including some running and an intensive gym workout as he recovers from his own injury still.
Tomorrow the team continues its training at 10.30 and I will be able to write more news then.

Barcelona 10-8 Olympiakos

Unfortunately we started our european Polo campaign with a loss to Barcelona and although we held them for half of the match, we collapsed in the second half and deservedly lost the game. This was annoying since at halftime we were winning the match by an 8-10 scoreline but such is life...

We therefore turn our attentions onto the next european match (against Mladost Zagreb).

Olympiakos 86-64 Ikarus Kallithea

We easily beat Ikarus Kallithea by a 22 point margin to mark our fourth victory in as many games of the A1 championship. This is despite missing both Papaloukas and Nesterovic (so that they can recover from their earlier ordeals). This was also our first game played behind closed doors and therefore we had no fans present to witness the devastating victory.

Despite a low intensity start from ourselves, we soon built a double digit lead in points before the end of the first quarter with Jamon Gordon making the basket in this case. This was Gordon's first start (in the initial team) as an Olympiakos player in the A1 league and he performed well overall, winning 5 points in total.

Gordon, along with Bourousis, Teodosic and Nielsen managed to bring the point differential to 18 points (37-19) some five minutes before the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, we maintained a ten point difference at all times and whenever Ikarus tried to bring the score back in line with them (52-40 at one stage), we simply took over the game again and increased the score to 59-42. The final quarter of the match saw Ivkovic trial several formations in play without the team falling back in their intensity and we sealed victory with the 86-64 scoreline mentioned in the title.

Olympiakos 86-64 Ikarus Kallithea

1st Quarter : Olympiakos 25-14 Kallithea
2nd Quarter : Olympiakos 47-35 Kallithea
3rd Quarter : Olympiakos 66-54 Kallithea
4th Quarter : Olympiakos 86-64 Kallithea

Olympiakos (Ivkovic) :- Gordon 5, Spanoulis 9, Bourousis 14, Keselj 8, Pelikanos, Mavrokefalidis 6, Glyniadakis 4, Nielsen 17, Papanikolaou 8, Teodosic 13, Katsivelis.

Ergotelis 0-0 Olympiakos (First half only...)

Despite some pretty atrocious weather conditions, we finally got the game ahead after the cleaners had been onto the pitch to literally sweep the excess water off from the pitch and onto the side. We got the game going but the going was very heavy with the water on the pitch slowing the ball down a huge amount and making the game very ponderous and plodding. Despite this though, we were making the best of the ball and getting some chances on goal. The best of which came from set pieces with Riera in particular getting an early header on target although Daskalakis (Ergotelis keeper) managed to save the effort.
The amount of water on the pitch was not just slowing dow the ball it was also making it hard for our players to gauge how much power to place into powers and made tackling and technical play far more difficult but at the end of the opening quarter hour, we were making slightly more out of the game than Ergotelis were.

Ergotelis' best chances also came from set pieces in the main but although they did have their first real effort on goal on the fifteen minute mark, Pardo was easily capable of saving the header on goal. Apart from this, it was the same as the first fifteen minutes. We were largely in control of the possession were having trouble in making any real efforts on the goal. When we eventually did get the ball into the net (just at the same time as my inconsistent stream died!), Torosidis was called back for offside and his goal disallowed although replays seemed to show that Torosidis was onside when the ball was played. Our fans are continuing with the great support that they have shown all match, turning an away fixture into a home tie with all of the support that they give.

As the half continues, the weather does not get any better and the already saturated pitch is certainly getting no better in quality. As mentioned earlier, this is leading to the ball slowing down and our usually good technical play being forced into a physical slugging match. Theres certainly nothing pretty about this match and as the time starts to move on half-time, it appears that we are not going to see any goals in this half. The game itself is very bogged down into a hit and move style of match with hardly any passes meeting their targets and a large number of balls being intercepted.
The halftime whistle is blown after 2 minutes of additional time and we go into the changing rooms with a 0-0 scoreline.

One stat to mention which sums up this half:-
Shots on goal : Ergotelis 2-5 Olympiakos

During the break, the rain continues to fall and the first thing that the referee does when he comes back onto the field is to delay the game by 15 minutes so that the pitch can be further cleared. After some frantic work by Ergotelis' ground staff (including getting the leaf blower on it!), the pitch unfortunately is not cleared enough and the remainder of the game is postponed until later. (tomorrow?)
