Expected lineup for Ergotelis

Gavros newspaper have released their best guess at todays lineup in front of the game itself. They are usually correct and I don't disagree with this example either :-

Pardo is found in goals rather than Nikopolidis whilst the back four consists of Torosidis, A.Papadopoulos, Modesto and Holebas. The midfield is being listed as Fetfatzidis, Hurtado, Dudu and Riera whilst the attacking players are Fuster as centre forward and Mirallas as the lone striker.
I believe that this will be the case on the pitch itself so we can only wait to see how we play against an Ergotelis side which have always given us some problems on our visits to Crete.
Kick off is at 17.15 and I will have a report on this site by a couple of hours after that.

Leaving for Crete

I found this picture and the article which accompanies it on John Xaros's excellent site. The picture is of course the ferry to Irakleio docked in Piraeus and filling with our fans ready for the match tomorrow. So this it appears is it, no more space, no more tickets available. Everyone and everything is ready to leave to Crete and to cheer our team onwards in what should be a well supported match.

They say that a picture paints a thousand words so as you can see from the banners alone, we have representatives of Gate7 clubs from all over Greece attending this game, with even Kastoria and Kerkyra clubs having their banners displayed. A total round trip of approximately 1600 km for a superleague game like this is truly impressive!!

Our red brothers from across mainland Greece and Crete have heard the call to support the team and the response has been astronomic for this match. What should have been an away match for us has been turned into a home tie (much to the administration of Ergotelis FC's profit) and now we have a great opportunity to provide an unique support in the game itself.
I can't say that I am not jealous of my brothers who are making the trip, excursions to watch Olympiakos are always a great experience and so I say to everyone going to the game itself... bring us victory.

Training - Friday 12th November

Our footballers completed the final training session of the week today in preparation for tomorrows game against Ergotelis. The details of this match are that it will start at 17:15 in the Pankritio stadium and is part of the 10th Superleague matchday.
As regards the training itself, we have the following news :-

  • Ibagaza followed the course of personal training.
  • Mellberg also followed a program of personal training and was declared unfit for the match tomorrow.
  • Raul Bravo will be taken to the Metropolitan Hospital today for a tomographical scan on his hamstring.
  • Nikos Papadopoulos continued with his personal training, increasing in intensity from day to day as he recovers his fitness.
  • The remainder of the team trained as normal.

After training had finished, Ernesto Valverde announced the names of the 18 players who have been chosen to represent the team in tomorrows match. These are :-

Goalkeepers :- Nikopolidis, Pardo

Up to ten thousand in Irakleio

It looks like that despite the earlier reports of 8,000 tickets being allocated to the supporters of the team, we have a further 2,000 tickets probably going to be taken by our supporters buying directly from the Ergotelis FC offices. The reports are unclear at the moment but it would appear that we will have anywhere between 8,500 and 10,000 fans attending the match itself (depending on which news reports you read).

Regarding the lineup of players, one report today suggests that Pardo will start off in the goal, with a back four of Torosidis, A.Papadopoulos, Modesto and Holebas in front of him. Across the midfield, we will be utilising Fetfatzidis, Hurtado, Dudu and Riera,  in front of them - Fuster as the centre forward and finally Mirallas as the lone striker.
We are expecting news of the final training session to be released by Olympiakos shortly so we will be able to confirm this one way or another, soon enough.

Training - Thursday 11th November

Our footballers continued with their preparations for Saturdays game against Ergotelis (Matchday 10 - Pankritio Stadium) with todays training session. The news to come from today is as follows :-
  • Olof Mellberg followed a program of treatment for his ankle rather than the main training. His injury however seems to have improved and he may well be available for this weekend after all. A final decision is expected tomorrow.
  • Ariel Ibagaza followed his own personal training regime including treatment on his leg and exercise in the swimming pool whilst Raul Bravo also followed a personal training program and will be submitted for a further hospital scan tomorrow.
  • Nikos Papadopoulos increased his training as he prepares to be rehabilitated in the main training sessions.
  • Vasilis Torosidis followed the main team training to a large degree and afterwards continued with individual training in the gym.
  • Kristian Nemeth trained regularly with the team.

Our weekly training will be completed tomorrow (10.00am) and immediately afterwards, Ernesto Valverde will name the 18 players making the journey to Crete. After this announcement, Kevin Mirallas will be awarded the MVP trophy for the previous game against Panionios.

More tickets for Ergotelis

In an increase on numbers, we have now been allocated 7,000 tickets for the game against Ergotelis this weekend, however even this number will probably be enough to satisfy the demand of numbers.

Obviously the game against Ergotelis is a highlight for the thousands of Olympiakos fans living in Irakleio, Rethymnon, Xania, Lasithi, Sitia and other parts of Crete and if all of the fans on the island were mobilised, they would be able to fill the stadium twice over on their own.
In addition to this, there will be the expected excursions from Piraeus by boat with hundreds of our fans making the trip to follow our team onto victory. So it would appear that even 7,000 tickets may not be enough to meet the requirements of our fans.
At the very least though, we will have enough fans in the stadium to cheer them on and encourage them to another victory.

EuroLeague Basketball : Olympiakos 86-78 Charleroi

We achieved our objective of victory when playing Charleroi tonight and maintain our position at the top of the Euroleague group. We actually won the victory with some realitve ease although it had to be admitted that we did not reach the standard of play that we had reached in previous matches. Still we maintained the victory despite showing some weaknesses in our defensive play.

Charleroi started the game by trying to mark Nielsen out as the danger man but we quickly countered that by changing our playmaker to being Nesterovic instead and quickly built up a lead of 23-8 points. Charleroi didn't help themselves by creating 3 fouls in just three minutes and it looked like that victory was going to be certain from the start of the match.

However, after the first quarter Charleroi returned into the action and reduced our lead by 23-18 at the start of the second quarter. From this point onwards until half time, the point differential was never great than 10 points and Charleroi was pushing us hard in this quarter although we had returned to using Matt Nielsen as the primary scorer and Vasilis Spanoulis as his backup. It was obvious to most of the spectators that we were not playing with any great urgency and we reached halftime with only a 9 point lead with the scores 42-33.

After the half time break, we made some strides forward in increasing the point differential with Robe Nesterovic making a quality performance in the third quarter and pushing the score to 64-48. Nestorovic managed to achieve 8 point-breaks during this period.
In the fourth and final quarter, we let our advantage slide somewhat with the score changing to 69-59 and then 72-65 although Milos Teodosic managed to stabilise the team by some good play and we finally finished the match with a 86-78 scoreline. Not a brilliant performance by any stretch of the imagination, our defence was very shaky on a number of occasions but we got the victory that we deserved and we move onto our Rome visit from here.

Olympiakos 86-78 Charleroi

1st Quarter : 23-16
2nd Quarter : 42-33
3rd Quarter : 64-50
4th Quarter : 86-78

Olympiakos: Nesterovic 18, Spanoulisv15, Bourousis 7, Keselj 3, Pelikanos, Mavrokefalidis 7, Nielsen 12, Papanikolaou 7, Teodosic 10, Loukas 7

Victory over Kifisia

Finally, we achieved victory in the mens Volleyball season with our first league win of the season. We managed to win the game against Kifisia (in the Zirineio arena) 0-3 sets in just over an hour and an half of play. It was a superior performance by our team who looked like they had finally turned a corner and put the poor performances of the last few weeks firmly behind them.

We had some difficulties in winning the first set as the progressive scores of 6-8, 14-17 and 19-20 will testify but as soon as this set was over (finally with a 22-25 score) we seemed to take over properly in the game.

We second set was never in doubt as we coasted to a 18-25 win and the third set was just as assured as we reached a 19-25 score and won the game with straight sets.

AO Kifissia 0-3 Olympiakos SC
1st Set : 22-25
2nd Set : 18-25
3rd Set : 19-25

Update on Injuries

It looks like my earlier report on Mellberg was wrong and he has since been submitted for a scan in the Metropolitan hospital. The scan showed that his hematoma has not fully healed and he may or may not be ready for this weekends match against Ergotelis. Modesto (who has since recovered from his viral infection) should be able to take his place if Mellberg is not ready to play.

Holebas looks set to be making a start at left back after Bravo's injury seems to have ruled him out for the weekend.

Torosidis (who I forgot to mention in the earlier report) followed a personal training programme today and should be fit enough to take part in the full team training tomorrow.

Torosidis wants to remain in Piraeus.

According to an interview printed in todays 'Gavros' newspaper, Vasilis Torosidis talked about his career and Olympiakos. I haven't reprinted the entire interview, it is available to read from the Gavros newspaper (  but one of the main points was his career and whether he wanted to remain at the club. The response was that he obviously enjoys playing for us and would even consider playing for the team until the end of his career. He mentioned that he has not thought about playing elsewhere in Europe.
The interview also talked about his contribution to the team with this seasons tally of 3 goals in 9 matches (never a bad amount for a defender!!) and the fact that with a home record of 14 goals for to one goal against, he feels that the fans provide a massive influence and support to the team.
